What is cellular senescence?

Everyone has senescent cells, and they are present throughout our body, including in the skin, brain, muscles, and heart. Everyday stressors, including poor diet, lack of sleep, psychological stress, and sun and environmental exposure, can trigger cells to become senescent. Normally, senescent cells are cleared within days to weeks by our immune cells. As we age, however, senescent cells accumulate—accumulating exponentially faster after 60—and impede immune function, creating a snowball effect that leads to even more senescent cells. As they build up in our body and persist, senescent cells can induce “inflammaging”, a type of inflammation associated with aging, and alter the microenvironment of the tissue and its function.
